Dee Caffari

In 2006, after six months at sea alone, Dee Caffari sailed into the history books. Dee is the first woman to circumnavigate the world 'the wrong way' against the prevailing winds and currents, solo, non-stop. An extraordinary achievement: only 4 men have done it. More people have walked on the moon! A former schoolteacher, Dee changed career to follow her dream. Within five years Dee had proven her skills as a skipper in a male-dominated profession. While leading a crew in the Global Challenge Yacht Race (2004-5), Dee decided to attempt one of the last great challenges in sailing. The award of the prestigious Raymarine Yachtsman of the Year and an MBE in 2007 celebrate Dee's achievement. Dee is currently training for the gruelling Vendee Globe and her bid for another world-record - to be the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, in both directions.

One of Britain's most courageous women, Dee speaks about the lessons learnt during her courageous 29,100-mile voyage. Motivation, a positive attitude to challenge and change, leading yourself, teamwork, clear communication and over-coming self-limitations are not optional extras when you are sailing alone and sleep-deprived among icebergs or through back-to-back tempestuous storms.
