David Blunkett

David Blunkett is the former Home Secretary and MP for Brightside, Sheffield. Whilst in office his responsibilities included civil emergencies, security, terrorism, expenditure and civil renewal. David has developed a reputation as a reformer and helped construct the local government audit commission. He was Labour Party chair at the time of the election and involved in the development of New Labour. As Secretary of State for Education and Employment, David developed the Learning and Skills Councils, created Job Centre Plus and launched the New Deal which created over 100,000 jobs for young people. Whilst at DfEE he also launched the Commission for Racial Equality and chaired the Equal Opportunities Commission. After the events of 9/11, David led a reform of the civil services; adapting the role of the Home Office to meet new challenges whilst maintaining the lead in immigration, drugs, crime and policing. He has also revised the Terrorism Act, outlawing terrorist groups operating in the UK and giving the police enhanced powers to investigate terrorism.
